Moments That Matter Small Grants Scheme

Moments That Matter- Small Grants Scheme

Our partners at The Housing Network have set themselves the challenge of raising £25,000 in 2025, to fund our small grants programme – Moment’s That Matter.  Opening in Spring 2025, this small grant scheme will allow those individuals and families living in temporary accommodation to access the funding they need for the little things that make life just a bit easier.  We’re unusual in that we choose to fund the things other charities think are non-essential…school trips, sports kit, day trips, training, tools for work and much more.  No one pretends that life in temporary accommodation is easy – we’re here to make it just a bit less hard.

Individual Grants

Our individual grants are aimed at those who are living in Temporary Accommodation.

We know that you may be applying to us as a last resort, so we will make sure that your application is processed efficiently and that your experience is as positive as possible. However, our funds are limited, so to maximise your chances of success please check that you are eligible and follow our guidance carefully.

  1. Ensure all your personal details are complete.
  2. Ensure that you have signed and completed the consent questions. Please read our Privacy Statement.
  3. Explain how the grant will help you – giving as much information as possible about your circumstances, why you are asking for a grant.

You can apply for yourself or on behalf of someone else.

If you are applying for yourself, you must meet the minimum criteria listed below.

If you are referring someone else, you must be a professional person (referrer) and know the applicant and their circumstances well.

Please note – households can only receive one grant award in any 6-month period to a maximum of three in any two-year period.

This isn’t an exhaustive list, just an indication of the sorts of things our Trustees are willing and able to provide funding for.  Remember that our Moment’s That Matter small grants scheme is about making life just a bit better, so we fund the non-essentials that brighten up your day.  Here’s some examples of what we’ll pay for:

  1. Help to pay for training or work tools, if you can supply details of the tools or training course you want to apply for and can demonstrate that it will help you to secure employment.
  2. The cost of school trips, if there is a compulsory payment for the trip and there is no bursary scheme available from the school.
  3. Sports equipment or kit for you or your children.
  4. A day out or short break for you and your family.
  5. Toys and games for your children.
  6. Community Projects that promote social inclusion in your street or neighbourhood.

Our grant awards range from £50.00 to £750.00 however our average grant award is expected to be less than £350. Please apply for a realistic amount or your application may be rejected.

Our grant awards are normally made in the form of vouchers, bank transfer or direct to a supplier.  Where we can, we’ll buy the item or experience for you, rather than sending you cash.

Because we only fund the non-essentials in life, we have taken the decision not to accept applications for things that other charities already provide.  For that reason, we don’t accept applications for items such as:

  1. Help to buy white goods e.g. fridge, freezer, microwave, washing machine or cooker
  2. Help to buy essential household goods e.g. bedding and beds, bedroom furniture, kitchen equipment.
  3. Help to buy food or clothing.
  4. Help to pay for priority debts including Gas, Electric, Water and Council Tax.
  5. Help to pay for bankruptcy costs or a debt relief order.
  6. Help to pay for rent or the deposit for your next home.
  7. Help to pay off your rent arrears.

In exceptional circumstances you may apply for help to buy a disability aid if you can supply details of the aid you want to buy and show that a government grant is not available. Grants towards electric wheelchairs will not be funded.

All applicants must have UK citizenship or been granted leave to remain.  They must be over 18 years old and have been resident in the UK for at least 12 months.

In addition, they must be in receipt of all state benefits they are entitled to (except where you are waiting for benefit to be awarded for example PIP or appealing against a decision of the DWP to refuse or withdraw a benefit)
